Are pilots allowed to use their personal phones on the flight deck?
Pilots are allowed to have their personal phones on the flight deck.
It is normal procedure in most companies that the captain will place the company phone in flight mode just before the engine start and that all other personal phones are also in flight mode before this stage.
If a pilot forgets to place a phone in flight mode, the first hint is usually interference in the headset as the phone loses signal or tries to connect to another transmission mast. It can of course also be an unwanted distraction if suddenly messages or calls are incoming while the pilots are performing flight-related tasks. So for many reasons personal phones should be switched in flight mode and not be used when you are on duty.
Happy landings
